“Grace and Peace to you this Sabbath day in the name of Our Lord, Jesus Christ!
We welcome you to this time of worship, where we come to celebrate God’s saving
grace in and through the death and resurrection of Christ. May your heart and
mind be filled anew with God’s presence! Welcome!"
Thought For The Day
His Name is Bill...
His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt
with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his
entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very
bright. He became a Christian while attending college.
Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed,
very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but
are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in
with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair.
The service has already started and so Bill starts down
the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can’t find
a seat. By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says
anything. Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he
realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet.
By now the people are really uptight, and the tension
in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the
back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the
deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly
man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he
starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t
blame him for what he’s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of
his background to understand some college kid on the floor?
It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The
church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane. All eyes are
focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing. The minister can’t even
preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do.
And now they see this elderly man drops his cane on the
floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and
worships with him so he won’t be alone.
Everyone chokes us with emotion. When the minister gains control, he says, “What
I’m about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will
never forget.”
The acolyte is Austin Nace.

AROUND THE COMMUNITY
|
Volunteers Needed…Adams Rescue MissionThe Adams Rescue Mission is seeking people who would be willing to volunteer.
They are looking for individuals who enjoy spending time and energy with others
while benefiting community residents. For more information on how you can make a
difference, please call (717) 334-7502.
Help Offered
The Living Hope Sunday School Class is willing to help with household chores
for those that need a little extra help. There is no charge for this service. If
you would like our help, please contact that Nace’s, Wampler’s, Ball’s, or
Temple’s.
Habitat for Humanity…Leaders Needed…
Can you swing a hammer...install an electrical box…hang dry-wall, or seed a
lawn?—If so, you are not only a talented person, you are one that can represent
a very significant ministry. Our congregation is currently looking for persons
who have a passion for people, let alone “home building skills.” Why? It is
simple: Our covenant relationship to the Adams County “Habitat for Humanity”
program is sitting dormant, until leadership can be found. —This “dormant”
status was recently discussed and approved by the Administrative Board. As a
result, we invite any and all to prayerfully consider such an involvement. For
further information, please call Jackie Angleberger, Mission Chair (624-8388),
or the church office at 334-3032.
Clothing Closet…G.U.M.C….Needs Help/Wants Clothes…
Have clothing you don’t wear?—Probably, it’s true, as many of us are well
blessed with an over abundance in our closets. Unfortunately, this is not the
case for everyone in our community.—Seeking to meet the need, a number of women
from the Gettysburg area are organizing a “clothing closet.” Our Board of
Trustees, under Hubert Goodwin’s leadership, has granted “dedicated space” on
the lower level of the building for such a purpose.—It will all begin
“officially” very soon.
You are invited to…1) Bring good, clean clothing for distribution (It will be
given as a “gift”) And/or volunteer to be a worker in the “closet.” To do
either, please call the coordinator, Mrs. Cathy Hernandez at 334-0006, ext 226.
Thank you!
Welcoming New Members to Gettysburg UMC…A number of person have recently expressed interest in uniting with our
congregation. How delighted we are to have them so do!—At this moment we are
anticipating that a welcoming will take place on Sunday, October 31st, at the
10:30 AM Worship hour. Equally, these persons, as others, are incited to share
with Pastor Jay in two “Get acquainted” gatherings that will take place on
Sundays, October 24th and 31st, at 9:15 AM in his office. For additional
information, please contact Pastor Jay (334-3032), or Peggy Hunt (337-0539) our
membership chairperson. Welcome!

Graying of the Church: Older Adult Ministry in 21st C.
Nearly half of the approximate 8.3 million members of the United Methodist
Church are 60 years of age or older. We are a “Graying Church,” which means
that “significant opportunities abound” in ministry. No one can speak to this
possibility any better than our own Rev. Dr. Richard Gentzler, Jr. (He is a
Central PA UMC pastor, serving as the Director of the Center on Aging and
Older Adult Ministries for the General Board of Discipleship.) Good fortune
has it that Dr. Gentzler will be at Calvary UMC in Lawrenceville, PA on Friday
and Saturday, November 5th (7:30-9:30 PM) & 6th (8:30 AM-4:30 PM) in order to
lead a “training workshop on older adult ministries.” The cost is $40/person
with a registration deadline of Oct. 25th. Interested person are welcome to
contact our church office about further information.

envelopes are to be used for donations to the church that are not covered by
your regular envelopes. Some examples are mission can donations, special
collections, special service offerings, etc. If the envelopes are used, we will
be able to add that record to your giving statement. Please be sure to put your
envelope number and/or name on the envelope so we know to which account it
should be recorded. If you have any questions, please see Fred Myers or
